AITRC Supporting Tribal Input on ANCSA §17(d)(1) Lands

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently consulting with Alaska Tribes regarding the future of ANCSA §17(d)(1) withdrawals on approximately 28 million acres of federal land across Alaska.

AITRC is assisting Tribes within the Ahtna region by providing GIS and technical support to help identify and document Tribal values associated with affected BLM lands. Following consultation between BLM and the Native Village of Tazlina, AITRC developed a facilitated mapping process that allows Tribes to identify important areas and document the subsistence, cultural, traditional-use, stewardship, and other values associated with those lands.

AITRC is finalizing this process with Tazlina and has similar mapping sessions scheduled with Gulkana, Mentasta, and Cheesh’na as they prepare information for BLM.
