TCD Network

AITRC is proud to be a Tribal Conservation District (TCD) and to help support the Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network, which brings together Tribal Conservation Districts, communities, and partners working to strengthen locally led stewardship across Alaska. The Network supports collaboration and knowledge exchange focused on subsistence and food security, climate adaptation, habitat stewardship and restoration, conservation, and cultural activities. AITRC co-organized the first Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network Annual Meeting alongside Knik Tribal Conservation District and Tyonek Tribal Conservation District, with funding from the Denali Commission. Through our role as a TCD, AITRC helps strengthen Tribal leadership in natural resource stewardship by combining traditional knowledge with technical resources, improving access to conservation funding, and supporting community-driven approaches that protect land, water, and cultural practices for future generations.

Tribal-led stewardship across Alaska!

AITRC, in collaboration with Knik Tribal Conservation District and Tyonek Tribal Conservation District, was honored to co-organize and take part in the first Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network Annual Meeting in 2026. This gathering brought together Tribal Conservation Districts and partners from across Alaska to share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and explore opportunities for locally led natural resource conservation. The Network helps connect Tribal Conservation Districts, communities, and partners who are working in areas such as subsistence and food security, climate adaptation, habitat stewardship and restoration, conservation, and cultural activities.

The Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network creates space for knowledge exchange, relationship building, and collaboration among Tribal Conservation Districts across the state. It also helps elevate shared priorities and supports continued growth of Tribal-led stewardship programs in Alaska. Tyonek Tribal Conservation District hosts a resource page for the Network that includes overview materials, evaluation documents, meeting agenda materials, and planning resources for Tribal Conservation Districts.

What is a Tribal Conservation District?

A Tribal Conservation District, or TCD, combines local and traditional knowledge with technical resources to actively manage natural resources in a defined area. According to USDA NRCS Alaska, the goal of a TCD is to set local priorities for conservation and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources for subsistence, economic opportunity, resource development, and cultural preservation. TCDs also establish a formal partnership between USDA and Tribal Nations, creating a framework to identify, develop, and provide technical, financial, and educational resources.

TCDs help provide a strong local voice in conservation efforts, strengthen nation-to-nation relationships, improve access to conservation funding, and offer technical, financial, and educational support. Through this structure, Tribal communities are better positioned to lead stewardship efforts that reflect their own priorities, values, and long-term goals.
