A Bit About Me
Peter Taylor is a mining geologist dedicated to making mining more ethical and sustainable in the present than it has been in the past. At AITRC he is studying abandoned mines in the Ahtna traditional use area to help find paths forward for their remediation. Peter is excited to help the Ahtna people utilize geology as stewards of their natural and cultural resources.
Peter began his career in the mining industry doing mapping, sampling, and prospecting in the hills above the Maclaren River. As an exploration geologist he learned how to manage large projects in vast mineral systems in the Laramide Cu-Porphyry belt of the SW USA(Freeport- McMoRan), and the Battle Mountain-Eureka Gold trend of central Nevada. The desire to live in Alaska, learn the underground mining cycle, and produce the essential ingredients of solar panels lead him to move to Juneau and take a mining geology job at America’s largest silver
mine: Hecla Greens Creek. Peter eventually became Greens Creek’s production geology manager and is proud to have been a leader at a modern mine with an admirable safety and environmental record.
Peter wasn’t always a professional, he once had a happy and outdoorsy childhood in Oregon.
